Beeren Plantproducts starts production of organic plant material
Due to a shift in the needs of many growers in Europe, Beeren Plantproducts has decided to start producing organic plant material. A large number of the growers in the company’s current customer base are now making the switch to organic or are already growing organic vegetables. In the spring of 2021, Beeren Plantproducts will start sowing leek plants and asparagus crowns on its organic plots.
Growth in organic vegetable market
Research has revealed that the organic market in leek and asparagus is growing, with particular interest in the French, Scandinavian, and Irish markets. The trend for organically and locally grown vegetables is becoming more and more prevalent in these regions. As Beeren Plantproducts is in regular contact with local growers through regular visits and a network of local agents, it is very aware of the market and its needs.
Shift from in-house plant materials to procured materials
Even today, many growers still produce their own plant material on a small scale. However, given the ongoing professionalization of the sector, more and more growers are choosing to procure their plant material from professional nurseries. There are several advantages to buying from nurseries: the plant material is delivered to the right place at the right time, as agreed, and the plant breeder’s economy of scale often leads to a price advantage for the grower.
Experience in plant breeding
Every year, Beeren Plantproducts grows around 150 to 200 million leek plants on the sandy soil of Neer in Limburg (the Netherlands). It also sells approximately eight million asparagus crowns to professional growers all over Europe, with the main markets being France and Germany.
‘Organic leek plants and asparagus crowns produced on-site are a logical addition to our range. We possess a great deal of knowledge, supported by over 60 years of experience in the conventional cultivation of plant material. We can now provide growers in Europe with a complete range,’ says John Beeren, managing director of Beeren Plantproducts.
